The big news for Buick in 1948 was the Dynaflow automatic transmission. Offered as an option on the Roadmaster Series, public demand for the new torque converter type of transmission increased so that production facilities were doubled, then tripled and finally quadrupled to meet orders. within two years eighty five percent of all Buick's would feature the Dynaflow transmission. The style leader of the Buick was the Riviera, the first mass produced hardtop with a convertible look that was shared with the Cadillac's Coupe de Ville and Old's Coupe. The Riviera had the first sweep-spear side trim and portholes that became distinctive trademarks on Buick.
